Course Summary
Visual Impairment Awareness Training
We offer half-day training sessions as follows:
A short explanatory film with commentary describes some of the
difficulties experienced by people when their sight deteriorates.
It also shows some simple solutions.
You will learn about the different methods of mobility, including:
· How to guide someone, correctly and
safely
· How guide dogs help their owners
· How a long-cane user gets around
· You will become aware of common hazards
which cause personal injuries
While learning about communicating with sight impaired people,
you will be told the sensible way to approach someone and offer
help.
How much do you know about alternative formats?
You will be shown examples of the Braille reading system and the Moon tactile reading system.
You will find out about “talking newspapers”, “talking
books”, “talking computers and dictionaries”.
You will be shown gadgets which can enable people to cope with
“daily living” after they start to lose their sight.
You will be taught how to help someone to sign their name on a dotted
line, and how to fold banknotes so that they can be distinguished.
The training session is presented in a manner which can be tailored
to suit the needs of those who are attending it. A certificate
will be awarded on completion of the training.
The EYE OPENER training sessions are presented by Marie Raynor
who has more than twenty years experience as a visual awareness
lecturer. Her training session usually lasts for two to three hours
but can be modified if necessary.
The Disability Discrimination Act requires you to provide an equal
standard of service to all your clients or customers. This visual
awareness training will help you to do that.
